Good question! Basically, the scoring goes like this:
Each ship, asteroid, or object you destroy has a particular point value.
Some star "powerups" have point values on them: 50, 100, 250, or 500.
Some star "powerups" give you a bonus multiplier: 2x or 3x
At the end of the mission, you get bonuses depending on your performance - how accurate your shots were (hits vs misses), how much shields and health you have at the end of the mission, and whether or not you ran into stuff during the mission. You need to maximize these bonuses at the end of the mission in order to achieve silver and gold medals.

i forgot to thank you for your answer! and thanks again for supporting linux! i'm really enjoying all the linux games you've been adding lately to your linux page, especially rick rocket and escalon!
i do have another question about the scores - when you replay a level, how does your new score fit into your overall score? does it add to it, or does it replace what you scored before on that level? thanks

It replaces the score you had before, and adjusts the total score appropriately.
I'm glad you are enjoying the Linux games. In the past two weeks, we've received affiliate deals with several developers that support Linux, and we now have a half dozen or so Linux games in the queue! We'll be adding one per day to our site over the next week or so, including a couple of brand new games that have just been released in the past few days! (Of course, there are Mac and Windows versions of these games too)
