Game Review: Ally's Adventure Through the Glass

produced by Pharos Games

Review by Troy Hepfner

Ally's Adventure Through the Glass is a charming fantasy adventure game for kids that is loosely based on Lewis Carroll's classic, "Through the Looking Glass".  It features many of the same characters and settings as the original book, plus some imaginative new story elements.

This game is basically an interactive story, and it is very well written.  You play the role of a young girl named Ally as she explores the Window World in search of her lost cat, Kitty.  Along the way, you interact with many interesting characters and explore lots of beautiful locations.  You make progress in the game by solving puzzles and answering riddles, which either opens up new areas to explore or unlocks certain things in places you have already visited.
The puzzles in this game really challenge you to think.  Many puzzles are educational and cover subjects such as math and science. In these puzzles, you must solve a hypothetical problem or answer a series of questions in order to advance. Other puzzles require you to make logical deductions about the people you meet, the objects you pick up, and the places you've visited. Mistakes are not fatal, so if you answer incorrectly, you can just try it again.
In addition to the puzzles, the game requires you to be observant.  There are lots of little details in the game that will escape your notice unless you pay close attention.  Often there will be a small detail on one of the screens or in a conversation with one of the characters that will yield a vital clue for solving the game.  I've played games like this before, and I have found it useful to keep a pad of paper and a pencil handy so I can write down things I need to remember.  Fortunately, if you really get stuck, you can visit the hints page on the Pharos Games web site and get some help.
The graphics in this game are photo-realistic and beautiful.  Each scene is pre-rendered, so there is very little animation. But you don't really need it, because the story itself is so engrossing. And the animation would tend to distract you while you are trying to search for clues and notice details.
If your kids enjoy reading, trivia, or mind puzzles, then give Ally's Adventure a try. It is a good adventure game that is sure to keep them entertained for a long time. Download the free trial of Ally's Adventure Through the Glass and see for yourself!
