November 2011 Newsletter

Dear customers and fans,

The holidays are just around the corner, so I want to remind you of the gifting option that is available in my new shopping cart that is powered by BMT Micro. Games make great gifts for family and friends! After you click on the Buy button for one of my games and are taken to the order page, just click the little gift icon and you'll be given a place where you can enter the e-mail address for the person you want to send your gift to.

Note: this only applies to my own games. For any games on my site that are made by other companies, you'll have to check with them regarding their gifting options.

Price Slashing

Last night, some ghoulish fiend must have snuck in and started slashing, because today Fashion Cents Deluxe and its sequel Fashion Cents Gents can be purchased for only $9.99 USD each! I panicked at first, but I have to admit the new price better matches the pricing for other games in the current casual games market. If you haven't played either of these games, now is a great time to give them a try!

Dirk Dashing 2 Hints and Tips

This month's tip concerns the various bonuses that are awarded when completing a level, like you see here:

I have yet to include descriptions of these bonuses in the game's instruction screens, so here is how they are defined:

  • Health bonus: earned by completing a level without ever getting hurt

  • Stealth bonus: earned by completing a level without ever tripping the alarm

  • Looter's bonus: earned by collecting 100% of the points in a level (Dirk's iSpy tracks your progress here)

  • Secured Area bonus: earned by putting all enemies in a level to sleep (excludes robots)

Medals are awarded based on how many bonuses you earn. You get a bronze medal just for finishing a level. You have to earn at least one bonus to get a silver medal, and you must earn at least 3 bonuses to get a gold medal.

I didn't require all 4 bonuses for a gold, because in some levels it is not possible to earn all 4 bonuses. For example, in Chapter 1-7 the alarm is deliberately triggered at the start of the level for added excitement, so the stealth bonus doesn't really apply for that particular level.

See if you can earn gold medals on every level!

Dirk Dashing 2 Production Update

What a busy month! We managed to finish all of the new features that I wanted for Dirk Dashing 2 before we submitted it to the 2012 Independent Games Festival. And we released v0.6.3 of the game, so you can enjoy the new features for yourself! Thanks again to all of the pre-order customers who helped test the game in the hours before the submission deadline!

Now that v0.6.3 has been released, I've started working on the levels for Part 3 of the story. I currently have 2 of the 8 levels done, and I'm working hard to try to finish up the remaining 6 levels before Thanksgiving. It's a tall order, but I'm going to do my best.

I've already added some new features for Part 3, including pressure plates, a new electrical hazard, and a new gadget. Here's a screenshot from Chapter 3-1, showing Mike's artwork for the new electrical hazard:

I'm designing the new levels in to take advantage of the new stealth abilities, and to bring back some of the cartoon interactions from the first game that were lacking in Parts 1 and 2 (like more crates to drop on enemies and the ability to send robots and other wheeled objects careening into enemies). Some of the new levels will also require the use of gadgets in order to complete the level. The levels so far have been solvable without using gadgets, but now that the game is progressing, I want players to start thinking about ways to use the stuff they're carrying in their inventory. Because of that, the Part 3 levels will be some of the most puzzle-oriented levels in the game.

Stay tuned!
